Shutter Speed

shutter speedShutter speed is the second part of the photography basics ‘trio’.

We’ve established that..

  • the sensor collects light
  • and aperture determines quantity of light (or blur)

Now this is where control of the shutter comes into play. The speed of the shutter determines how long the sensor will be exposed to the light.

It is most often used to control motion in a photo.

shutter speedBy this, I mean, that you can either “freeze” motion or you can “imply” motion.

A fast shutter allows you to “freeze” motion. A slow shutter will result in a motion blur. This motion blur is different from the blur resulting from wide open apertures.

Control of the shutter is a creative tool that allows you to tell your own story of the events you see with your eyes.

Love your camera. Love yourself. Love your photos.
