Photography backgrounds are used extensively in portrait photography and I feel that a mark of a careful portrait photographer is the use of balanced backgrounds.
In portrait photography, the emphasis is on the subject and the best way to isolate the subject is to ensure that they are against an uncluttered background.
When the background is uncluttered, your subjects will “pop” and the result is a pleasing image. I would recommend the possibility of using studio-type backgrounds to further explore your photographic creativity.
Muslin Backgrounds

Muslin is a natural, finely-woven fabric made of cotton.
You can find fine muslin backgrounds at reputable camera stores in your city.
Most of these backgrounds are about 10′ x 24′ (approximately 3 meters x 7.3 meters) and are dyed in a variety of colors.
A lot of portrait work I have encountered use solid color muslin fabric. However, you may find muslin backgrounds with a variety of dyed effects.
Muslin backgrounds are great, easily transportable and provide an uncluttered background for your subject.
Seamless Paper Backgrounds
Seamless paper backgrounds are an alternative to muslin because they are cheaper and don’t have color variations that the muslin sometimes has.
However, they are also more prone to tearing and are easily dirtied. As well, they are bulky and not as easily transportable.
Paper backgrounds come in a variety of lengths and widths and come on a roll. You will need to ensure that this roll is properly supported by your background stands.
Natural Backgrounds
And finally, if you are looking for a photography background for your subject, consider using what is around the subject.
In this case, it could be the sky, or the trees or whatever else.
Please ensure that your background is sufficiently uncluttered and is free from elements that may distract from the subject.
Examples of distracting backgrounds are:
- busy intersections
- trees that look like they’ve sprouted from your subject’s head
- large, blocky objects…
Love your camera. Love yourself. Love your photos.
