This Nikon D40 review is about Nikon’s excellent introductory digital SLR camera for budget-minded SLR photographers.

The D40 was the first digital SLR camera I bought. I bought it for the following reasons.

  • It was the lightest camera on the market.
  • It “fit” my hands well.
  • I found the controls to be intuitive.
  • It was within my budget.

The D40 was introduced in December of 2006 and was intended to replace the Nikon D50. As of this writing, this camera is more than two years old.

In terms of digital SLR technology available today, it is a dinosaur and is surpassed by many other cameras in its class.

However, I love shooting with this camera because it is fun and light!

Here are some quick technical specifications of this camera:

  • 6.1 megapixel camera; 3008×2000 pixel images in L size
  • ISO 200-1600
  • Shutter from 30 sec. to 1/4000 sec.
  • 2.5″, 230,000 pixel LCD
  • SD/SDHC memory cards
  • 1.5x crop factor
  • 3-point AF
  • 475g (1lb. 1oz.) without battery, body cap, straps
  • WxDxH is 126mm x 64mm x 94mm (5.0 x 2.5 x 3.7 in)
  • 2.5 frames/sec shooting
  • Fully compatible with Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses
