Among the dSLR advantages is the control of DOF, or depth of field. This control allows you even greater creative leeway over your photography.
Depth of field is what gives you, the photographer, creative control over what part of the image you want to emphasize.
For me, this is, by far, the greatest digital SLR camera advantage over a non-dSLR camera.
With non-dSLR cameras, it is very difficult to give emphasis to a particular part of the photo.
By allowing you greater control over aperture settings, the dSLR returns control to you as a photographer.
